Poor road conditions claim life of Terrace man on Highway 16

Yesterday's motor vehicle accident on Highway 16 tragically has claimed the life of a 38 Terrace man, one driver in a three truck collision that closed Highway 16 for the majority of the day Monday.

Weather conditions were described as poor with snow covering Highway 16, 70 kilometres east of Prince Rupert, at the time of the accident a weather advisory was in effect for that portion of the Highway.

Around 11 am, an eastbound truck collided with a westbound one at the accident point, followed by a collision by a third truck which was following and unable to stop in time.

RCMP and Fire/Rescue units from both Prince Rupert and Terrace responded to the accident, using the Jaws of Life on two vehicles of the accident scene. An Air Ambulance was required to transport one of the victims to Prince Rupert Regional Hospital where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

The other two drivers were transported to Mills Memorial Hospital in Terrace by the BC Ambulance Service.

An investigation of the incident and clean up of the scene took place through the afternoon, with the highway reopened to alternating one lane traffic by early evening, the alternating lane situation remains in effect into Tuesday morning.

Further updates on the status of conditions on the Highway can be found at the Drive BC website.
