New Bishop takes charge of Diocese

Last Tuesday Roman Catholics across Northern British Columbia celebrated the installation of their new Bishop.

Prince George's Sacred Heart Cathedral was the host of the Tuesday evening ceremony which saw Stephen Jensen ordained as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Prince George.

His is a territory which spans the northern reaches of British Columbia from east of Prince George, through to Haida Gwaii.

The Catholic church in the Prince George Diocese has just under 50,000 parishioners in the region, with 24 priests responsible for the 37 parishes and missions that are found through the North, among them Prince Rupert's Annunciation Church.

As we outlined on the blog in January, the new Bishop was named upon the retirement of former Bishop Gerry Wiesner, Bishop Jensen was named to his post on January 3rd.

The Prince George Citizen had this account of Bishop Jensen's ordination service.

More on the April 2nd Ordination of Bishop Jensen can be found on the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops website, including this link to videos of Tuesday's celebration.

Note: We have corrected the above item from it's original posting, to provide for the correct spelling of Bishop Wiesner's name, our thanks to those that drew our attention to the error and apologies are extended for the mistake.
