Highway 16 CLOSED east of Usk owing to fatal accident; latest update on reopening is 6 PM

Update: Revised timeline -- road re-opened at 6 PM

Travellers heading beyond Terrace this afternoon and into the evening will be in a holding pattern after a serious incident resulted in one fatality on the Highway east of that city this morning

Drive BC is advising motorists that Highway 16 east of Terrace will not be open for traffic until 10 PM this evening, while the investigation into the incident continues.

The road was closed in the mid morning period, as RCMP and emergency responders arrived at the scene of the incident near the Usk area of the region. There is the option of travellers using the Cranberry connector, but the Ministry of highways does not recommend that route at this time, as they do not know the condition of the alternate route.

Media reports out of the Terrace outline the nature of the two vehicle collision which claimed one life.

A photo obtained by radio station CFNR provides the a vivid visual impression of the nature of the crash. While this article from the Terrace Standard offers up more background on the incident.

Updates on the status of the highway can be found from the Drive BC website.
