City Council Preview: Monday, February 20, 2017

A fairly light agenda should make for a rather brief get together at City Council Chambers this evening, with only a handful of items up for discussion in the Regular Council session on the night.

Though the length of the evening session could depend on how chatty local residents may be, with the first Public comment opportunity for the year taking place this evening, that through the Monthly Committee of the Whole portion of the night.

Last months public commentary opportunity was scrubbed by Council when they cancelled the January 23rd session.

From that decision, Council also eliminated the Committee of the Whole session scheduled for that night, which meant that the last time a citizen had an opportunity ask a question of their council in a public session was as part of the November 28th session in 2016,  making for a gap from public feedback of almost three months.

Whether there is a lengthy list of public concerns ready to be shared, or if the public has all but abandoned any thoughts of asking questions of their elected officials anymore will be known shortly after 7 PM.

As the evening moves forward into the Regular Session, Council will review a report related to a property on Kootenay Place, from Caroline von Schilling, the City's Community Planner (who makes her report writing debut tonight on council Agendas).

A Correspondence from the NWCC students union makes for another topic for discussion.

While council also has one Bylaw issue to discuss before the evening comes to an end.

You can review the background documentation for tonight's Regular Session from the Agenda Package here.

Council will also be holding a Closed Session for this evening starting at 5 PM, the city citing criteria from Section 90 of the Community Charter, noting that the public is to be excluded from those deliberations for the the following reason.

personal information about an identifiable individual who holds or is being considered for a position as an officer, employee or agent of the municipality or another position appointed by the municipality; and discussions with municipal officers and employees respecting municipal objectives, measures and progress reports for the purpose of preparing an annual report under section 98.

The evening will begin with the Committee of the Whole Session, where residents can raise issues or concerns with members of City Council.

As for the Regular  Council session that starts off with the adoption of agendas and minutes.

Petitions and Delegations

Any Notes on Unfinished Business will follow that presentation.
