Port of Prince Rupert to expand Agricultural shipments, as Quebec company announces Ridley Island facility

A ten acre development on land adjacent to the recently completed Road, Rail and Utility corridor will provide for jobs for the North Coast and another element of product shipment out of the Fairview Container Terminal.

In an information statement released Monday morning, the Prince Rupert Port Authority outlined the completion of an agreement with Ray-Mont Logistics to develop an integrated logistics and container loading facility on the Ridley island site.

Making use of the rail lines as part of the Ridley Island Corridor, the terminal will take delivery of a range of commodities from Western and Central Canada, as well as the United States.

The project will see a rail loop corridor created to handle in excess of 100 hopper cars, they will be unloaded at the new facility, with the product then transferred to containers for further shipment to markets overseas.

Among the products that will be shipped out of Prince Rupert will be pulses and cereals, including lentils, peas, beans soybeans, flax and wheat, a number of other specialty agricultural products will also make use of the facility.

The project would help to increase the number of container movements that will be sent out of the Prince Rupert port and more importantly create for port related employment at the Ray Mont facility with 40 jobs expected to be created as part of the Operation of the facility.

Charles Raymond, the President and CEO of Ray-Mont Logistics International outlined how the company came to select Prince Rupert for it's corporate expansion plans.

“It is our pleasure to be working with the Prince Rupert Port Authority and its partners to establish a new transload facility in the Port of Prince Rupert, and continue to pioneer efficient services for connecting North American crops to overseas customers,” ... “Our core values of quality, flexibility and innovation are reflected in the strategic vision being executed by the Port of Prince Rupert, and we look forward to adding this valuable service to the Prince Rupert supply chain later this year.”

IDL projects will begin the clearing of land for the facility on behalf of the Coast Tsimshian Northern Contractor Alliance, with work to commence this week, it is anticipated that the new facility will be constructed and in operation in time for the 2017/18 crop year later this fall.

For the Port of Prince Rupert today's announcement makes news on two levels, the first in the way of product diversification, with the Port adding to the existing levels of commodity shipments.

The second and one that has the most impact on residents of the region, is the creation of those 40 jobs in operations and the amount of work that will be available as the project moves forward this summer.

Don Krusel, the President and CEO of the Port Corporation made note of how the additional shipping capacity will continue to highlight the advantages for shippers in using the Port of Prince Rupert.
