NWCC reduces campus locations with closure of Houston Learning Centre

The end of June will bring more than the end of a school year for those that attended the Houston campus of Northwest Community College, it will also mark the end for courses and training opportunities at the Houston Learning Centre.

Terrace based Northwest Community College released an information statement on Tuesday announcing that due to declining student enrolment in the community that the Centre would be closing its doors on June 30th, noting that keeping the centre open in the community was no longer economically viable.

NWCC President Ken Burt praised the work of the staff that had provided service to the community and  noted the hope of a reopening should the conditions improve.

“We know and appreciate the exceptional amount of work the staff, faculty and community have put in to make the Houston campus a success,” ... “We routinely hear of the terrific work our staff are doing there and are proud of their efforts.”  ... “We are hopeful that in time, demand will return sufficiently to reopen the doors,”

The closure of the Houston campus comes as the area has suffered a number of economic hits in recent years, with significant layoffs and closures taking place with area industries.

NWCC is looking to work with the local school district, or to make use of the college's mobile Training unit to serve the area should there be an opportunity or need for training in the region in the future.

The Houston Learning Centre is among eight campus locations across the Northwest which offer varying levels of service to the region.
