Metlakatla provides new resources for fishing community

A new information portal has been launched by Metlakatla Aquatic Resources, which is designed to provide some background on fishery related issues in the Metlakatla Traditional Territory.

It's described as a site dedicated to fisheries and aquatic resource information for Metlakatla members and is set to offer fishery related updates for the community.

The Facebook page was created on August 2nd and has so far provided for alerts when weather conditions on the water are about to change, as well as an advisory on the state of abalone harvesting which is still banned and illegal to harvest.

As part of their information, they outline how residents of the North Coast can report any violations or suspicious activity through DFO's Observe, Report and Report line at 1-800-465-4336

On the theme of further study of that fishery resource, the MAR notes that they have received funding for further study on the issue and how to help in a recovery of abalone in the Metlakatla territory.

Meetings are planned for this fall in the community to discuss ways to gain legal access to a food source that Metklatla elders and residents hold most sacred.

You can review more of their notes from the Aquatic Resources page here.
