Time to Celebrate Canada

Prince Rupert's Canada Day Celebrations get underway today with a picnic in the park to help kick off the local celebrations for Canada's 146th Birthday.

The Afternoon events take place at Mariners Memorial Park and will feature a number of activities for young and old alike, among some of the scheduled events for the day are:

Live Music, Trivia Testing, Contests and Games, Children's Face Painting, a chance to sample a variety of ethnic foods and an opportunity to start your own Canada Day Forest with the distribution of Tree seedlings.

There will be speeches from local politicians and dignitaries, as well as the Flag Raising and a performance of O Canada (start your practice now for your chance to sing a long).

Of course no Birthday celebration is complete without a Cake and a Giant Canada Day cake will be available for sampling by those attending the celebrations.

The local celebrations have been organized by Prince Rupert's Special Events Society, you can review their Canada Day program here.

The Canada festivities will come to an end with the Fireworks display over Prince Rupert harbour later in the evening, anticipated time for the show is around dusk, expected at 11 PM or so. Though wise Rupertites and visitors alike may wish to stake out their turf at the Park a little bit earlier.

That display will be best viewed from Mariners Park.

The Fireworks display will take place weather permitting, you can consult the updated forecast from the Environment Canada website.
