Forest Fire visible from Highway 37 at Kitwancool

While the majority of the Northwest fared fairly well from a hot long weekend, there is one area where nature is on fire, as a 3.5 hectare fire is visible east of Highway 37 at Kitwancool Lake.

The Wildfire Management Branch reports that at the moment, no properties or infrastructure, including Highway 37 is at risk, smoke and working aircraft may be visible in nearby communities and by travellers on the highway.

A 20 person sustained action crew is on site, with another 20 person crew called in to assist. They are working in very steep terrain and amongst a very dry forest fuels.

The Wildfire Management Branch has tasked a number of air actions for the next few days to control the spread of the fire.

Residents and travellers across Northern British Columbia are asked to report any wildfires and unattended campfires, you can reach the Wildfire Management Branch at *5555 on cellphones or toll free at 1-800-663-5555.

Fire officials credit a number of phone reports received over the weekend as key to their response to the Kitwancool fire and other reported fires over the weekend.
