The shipments of grain and oil seeds have been on an upward trend at Prince Rupert Grain in the last year and the latest numbers show that the throughput at the Ridley Terminal Grain Elevator continues to push the Port of Prince Rupert further onto the international stage.
The Prince Rupert Port Authority released numbers this month that show a 15.5 per cent year-over-year increase for Prince Rupert Grain, with the Port shipping 3.1 million tonnes of product to export markets from January 1 to July 31. That shipment count is up significantly from the same period last year when the Port shipped 2.7 million tonnes.
When it comes to product, this year Canola would seem to be King, providing for an impressive bump in the Port's throughput through to July 31st.
Canola shipments were the main product of delivery to the world markets, up 109 percent with 866,000 tonnes shipped out of Prince Rupert in the first seven months of 2013, in 2012 Canola shipments accounted for 413,000 tonnes in the same period of time.
Barley Shipments also increased significantly, with 107,000 tonnes shipped out to July 31st in 2013, that compares to last years numbers which provided for 45,000 tonnes in the same period.
Combined figures of grain and oil seeds in the 12 months ending July 31st were 5.15 million tonnes, up from 4.74 million tonnes from 2011-12.
