The summer solstice once again provides the date on the calendar for this years National Aboriginal Day celebrations, with Prince Rupert events set to start at the noon hour on Saturday.
In years past the day has been celebrated at the Rotary Waterfront park, with the Civic Centre playing host on those days that the weather does not cooperate. Once again, it appears that the weather office will most likely provide guidance as to where this years celebrations take place.
But at whatever location plays host, the day will be full of a variety of events.
The noon hour to 12:30 block is given over to representatives of different levels of government, school officials and First Nations elders.
From 12:30 on through the day and into the evening, a variety of dancing and drumming will provide the backdrop to the days events.
Among those scheduled to participate through the day are: Sm'Halaayt Dancers, Roosevelt / PCS Drummers, Jaimee Aubee, Haida Nation Dancers, Kianna St. Louis/Arianna Spencer, Gitmaxmak'ay Dancers and the Nassville 5.
As well, organizers highlight a presentation from Ta'kaiya Blaney, a member of the Sliammon First Nation scheduled for the day The twelve year old who has spoken at UN meetings on the environment will bring her message to those attending the Prince Rupert event.
It's anticipated that her presentation will start at shortly after 5 PM
