Probably every week should be Fire Prevention week, but over the last five days and into two more, the focus on Prevention has been hard to miss.
Whether it has been through sessions at local Schools or with community groups like the local Scouts movement, the message of taking stock of your home or business situation has been key to the week of Fire Prevention education.
For the members of Prince Rupert Fire Rescue the message, particularly for school kids and youth groups is a mixture of fun and information, with the goal probably one of a discussion or two around the house when it comes to escape plans, fire extinguishers and smoke detectors among other safety
messages.
The Prince Rupert Fire Rescue service has been a part of the city's fabric in one way or another since November of 1908, first as a volunteer brigade, then expanding to a professional fire department in March of 1910.
Some of that history can be explored through the City's Fire Museum located adjacent to the First Avenue East Fire hall.
As long time Rupertites will tell you, over the years the members of the PRFD have had more than few large fires to contend with.
Many of them the kind of story that makes for headlines and fascinating photography. With more than a few of those fires from the past, still the thing of discussions around town to this day.
The focus of October however is to prevent fires and towards that goal, some helpful Fire prevention advice can be found through the Prince Rupert Firefighters Facebook page
More background on the Prince Rupert Fire Rescue service is available from the City of Prince Rupert website.
