Charles Hays Junior Girls claim NW banner; Junior boys finish second in Terrace zones battle

Basketball was definitely the focus around Prince Rupert this weekend, with the final matches of the 56th All Native Basketball Tournament playing out at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre providing for another year of exciting finishes and a few changes atop the division winners standings.

However, the ANBT was not the only basketball taking place this weekend, as the regional High School tournaments began to take place around the Northwest.

This weekend, Charles Hays Secondary was busy hosting the Junior Girls Zones tournament, offering up a string of Saturday Showdowns that delivered the first basketball banner for the school for 2015.

By the end of the Tournament the Junior Girls Rainmakers had claimed the title finishing atop the pack, knocking off Caledonia 42 to 27 in the final match up for the title.

Down the road in Terrace, the Junior Boys Rainmakers found themselves in a familiar spot taking on the Caledonia Kermodes, the final of the Northwest Junior Zone providing for the latest instalment of the ages old rivalry between the two schools.

This Saturday however belonged to the Kermodes, as Caledonia claimed the banner in yet another hard fought game with the Junior Rainmakers.

The Basketball zones continue this weekend as the Senior Girls take to the road to Smithers,  seeking their opportunity to bring a banner back for the CHSS Gym.

The Senior Boys will be hosting the Senior Zones next weekend, with action taking place Thursday through Saturday at the CHSS Gym.

The tournament marks the end of the Northwest Zone basketball season, with a berth in the Provincial Finals in Langley on the line for the competing squads.
