Blog Watching, week ending September 20, 2015

Lelu Island and issues associated with it dominated the news cycle for much of the week, with developments from last Sunday through to Friday afternoon book ending the focus on the area that Pacific NorthWest LNG has proposed for its LNG terminal location.

The attention to the most recent events on Lelu Island  began last Sunday, with our review of events taking place over last weekend.

With our overview on the actions taken by those that had set up what they have called a camp of occupation on the Island, stopping temporarily as it turned the survey work at the controversial Flora Bank area of the island.

Those developments carried much of the flow of Lelu Island related news up until Friday, when two announcements from the Lax Kw'alaams First Nation advising that they were starting the process to seek aboriginal title to Lelu Island caught everyone's attention on Friday afternoon.

The background to the Lax Kw'alaam quest for that aboriginal title, also caught the attention of other Tsimshian communities, with the Metlakatla First Nation providing their answer towards some of those comments of earlier in the day.

All three of our notes on those developments quickly caught the attention of readers, with the late Friday items in particular finding a large audience in a very short period of time.

Two other items did manage to find their way into the blog's top five listings as the week moved forward, as our review on the progress of the WCC LNG project proposed for Tuck Inlet found a wide audience.

While the update on a Marine incident in Prince Rupert harbour last year from the Transportation Safety Board also cracked its way into the five most read items of the week.

However, when it comes to the most read item of the week, it was our look at the recent developments on Lelu Island which attracted the most readers of the last seven days.

Lax Kw'alaams members on Lelu Island say that they have stopped weekend survey work in area waters   -- With one week to work its way through the North Coast news cycle, our item from last Sunday evening noting the latest developments from a group holding an occupation camp on Lelu Island proved to be a very popular read as the week moved forward (posted September 13, 2015)

Transportation Safety Board releases findings into July 2014 grounding of the Amakusa Island -- Interest was high this week when it came to our notes on the findings of the Canadian Transportation Board, which issued its report into the marine incident in the approaches to Prince Rupert harbour of July 2014 involving the Japanese vessel Amakusa Island  (posted  September 14, 2015)

Lax Kw'alaams First Nation to proceed with title action on Lelu Island and Flora Bank  -- Friday's mid-afternoon announcement on the start of a process to claim title on Lelu Island by the Lax Kw'alaams found a large audience in a very short period of time  (posted September 18, 2015)

Metlakatla stakes a claim to the discussion on Lelu Island -- The view count on the blog  was high as well when The Metlakatla First Nation offered up its perspective on issues related to Lelu Island, with their own information statement of Friday (posted September 18, 2015 )
