Blog Watching: Week ending January 21, 2018


The City of Prince Rupert's communication company CityWest dominated the news cycle this week, with word of a significant amount of funding from the Federal and Provincial government to be put towards a major Sub Sea fibre optic project.

News from the Recreation Centre was also of some interest this week, with David Geronazzo the new Director of Recreation and Community Services making his debut at City Council, providing a report on some proposed housekeeping changes to some of the fees at the facility.

Recreation also featured high over the last seven days with a large volume of readers exploring the registration plans for the upcoming Minor Softball season in the city.

There were more shovels in the ground around the Atlin Terminal as the Port of Prince Rupert began a project that will see a promenade put in place to connect the Atlin Terminal with the Northland Cruise Terminal.

And wrapping up our review of the five most read items of the week was our story on the recent tour of the Northwest by Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, as Minister Shane Simpson hosted community sessions in Prince Rupert, Terrace/Kitimat and Smithers.

The top story of the last seven days however explores some success for CityWest as the communication company secures funding for a long proposed fibre optic link south and west.

CityWest to receive share of Federal/Provincial funding for improved Internet Service -- A major announcement for Prince Rupert's communication company as CityWest received word of funding for the installation of  a Sub Sea fibre optic cable project along the West Coast to Vancouver Island, as well as internet upgrades fir Haida Gwaii.  Readers also found some strong interest in our follow up piece which provided more background when it comes to the CityWest plans. Port of Prince Rupert breaks ground on Atlin Promenade project -- The next phase of the Port's redevelopment plans for the Atlin Terminal/Cow Bay area got underway this week, as crews began work on a promenade to connect the Northland Cruise Terminal with the Atlin Terminal  (posted January  16, 2018)

Expansive list of issues explored as Poverty Reduction tour crosses the Northwest -- British Columbia's NDP government hosted a number of community sessions to learn more about how poverty is impacting communities across the region. Shane Simpson the Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction heard from a large volume of residents on the theme. In Prince Rupert the session was hosted by North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice (posted January 15, 2018 )
