Nathan Cullen to launch new initaitve, seeking to create a better Canada
Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen is taking his quest for a better Canada to the people, tabling a private members' bill in the House of Commons that will give local residents a chance to craft some legislation.
Towards his goal, the MP is hosting a number of town halls in the region, with the Prince Rupert version set for Tuesday, May 15th at 7PM at the new constituency office in the Ocean Centre downtown.
Similar town halls are planned for Smithers, Terrace and Hazelton.
The project is seeking ideas from constituents as to how to introduce a new federal law to create a better Canada. With the hope of providing for legislation that will help guide Canada into the future that you would want to see.
To participate you must be a constituent of Skeena-Bulkley Vally, and must provide a submission that has two ideas for consideration.
One contest winner will win a trip to Ottawa to watch the Member of Parliament present their bill in the House of Commons.
A panel of judges will select the winning submission, using the following criteria:
Organization -- clear expression of ideas and direct connection between the issue and the proposed solution.
Originality -- Does the bill tackle the stated issue in a new and unique way
Jurisdiction -- The bill must fall within the realm of Federal powers
Benefit/Impact -- Does the bill benefit or have a positive impact on society
Ease of Enforcement -- Can the proposed bill be easily enforceable or will enforcement be a challenge
To enter the Create Your Canada competition, you can email your submission to nathan.cullen.c1@parl.gc.ca
You can also email your submission to Mr. Cullen's Smithers constituency office at PO Box 4919, Smithers BC V0J 2N0
The deadline for the competition will be Fall 2018
It's not the first time that Mr. Cullen has tapped the Northwest to offer up some forward thinking projects for Federal MP's to explore. The CBC made note of his efforts back in 2009, when students from the Northwest had their opportunity to craft the a bill for presentation.
The exercise in democracy is a valuable lesson for constituents, though it should also be noted that MP's private members bills rarely gain much traction as part of the business of the House, with many good intentions sitting on a shelf in an MP's office to celebrate past experiences.
Still that should not deter anyone from sharing their views and providing a document that may just beat those Private members odds ...
