Overlook Community Garden plans moving along quickly

Some land clearing and garden bed construction is on the horizon for the
city land on Overlook Street area, as Transition Prince Rupert
prepares for their community garden build days in July

Mid July is the target date for residents and neighbours of the Overlook area to get to work on the development of their community garden project, with Transition Prince Rupert taking the lead in the development of the second community garden to be built in the city.

The Overlook project was recently awarded a $5,000 Imagine Grant from Northern Health and will be using that grand funding as seed money if you will, for their garden plans.

The two days set aside for the build day, are July 14 and 15, with the work to take place at the Court located on city land that makes up part of the cul de sac on Overlook.

Transition Prince Rupert has estimated that the full amount of time required for the project will be 300 hours, as part of their planning for the Build Day they have put out the call for residents with knowledge and expertise in construction and carpentry skills.

The permanent structure is to be built primarily out of cedar, with seedlings and starter plants to be put in place this season, the harvest of their work will be distributed equally between those that have been involved in the building and follow up gardening requirements for the project.

The Imagine Grant was awarded on May 17th, with the City of Prince Rupert approving the permit for construction on City property on May 31st.

The local organization is hoping that the Overlook project, which they are calling their latest placemaking activity, will lead to other neighbourhoods taking up the challenge of developing their own community gardens and other neighbourhood initiatives.
