Participation in the 2018 Prince Rupert City Council and School District vote is but a Free bus ride away

Prince Rupert Council has approved a plan to offer Free transit for residents
on October 20th, with hopes that it will help to boost voter participation in
this years 2018 Municipal election.

Residents of Prince Rupert looking to take part in the democratic process on October 20th can take advantage of a day of Free bus service, with Prince Rupert City Council approving a recommendation from staff to waive the usual bus fare for this years election day.

The proposal was outlined Monday night by the City's Financial Officer Corinne Bomben, who is also the City of Prince Rupert's Chief Electoral Officer.

In her presentation, Ms. Bomben observed for council that the opportunity to ride the bus for free could help spur voter participation in this years Municipal and School District vote at the Civic Centre.

Councillor Gurvinder Randhawa spoke in support of the proposal prior to Council's vote that moved the project forward, with the Council members then instructing city staff to contact BC Transit to inform them of the decision.

The Free bus ride program is one that is being hosted by a number of British Columbia communities across the province, the initiative one of a number of ways that municipal governments are hoping to improve on low voter turnouts of the past.
