A three block section of Frederick Street on the city's east side was under lock down of sorts by the Prince Rupert detachment of the RCMP on Wednesday evening.
That as members blocked off the area from 11th Avenue East to Eighth Avenue East over the dinner hour.
Social media postings on the evening featured a range of photos of the police operation, mostly focused on the heavily armed officers who were searching a wooded area of Frederick leading up towards the Plaza area off of 11th Avenue East.
Along with the photos, came a wide range of speculation as to what was going on during the course of the heavy police presence.
While officers searched the immediate area, other members manned barricades around the area, redirecting traffic and pedestrians away from the three blocks of interest.
The area within the triangle above was the subject of a strong police presence on Wednesday evening in the Frederick Street area of the city |
The activity in the region appeared to come to an end shortly after the 7PM mark.
To this point, no details have been released by the Prince Rupert detachment to explain the nature of the police action and what any threat to the public may have been.
Should the RCMP issue an information release on the incident, we'll add the details to our post.
Update: A 32 year old male and 26 year old male are in police custody after this evenings police operation on the city's east side. Both arrested for possession of a pair of weapons for dangerous purposes.
Prince Rupert RCMP outlined the nature of the operation in an information release Wednesday evening.
On September 5, 2018 at 4:24PM police were called to the 1600 block of 10th Ave E to a report of a suspicious occurrence. A witness observed two men carrying rifles in a suspicious manner as if they were trying to conceal them.
The men were observed jumping a fence and heading into a tree line near the area. Police attended and located the two suspects near the area in possession of the rifles.
Both men immediately ran from police who chased after them. One man was taken into custody a short distance later; however, the other man ran into a wooded area.
As part of the police presence, the Terrace Police Dog service was contacted to help locate the outstanding suspect, who was arrested upon discovery in the wooded area off of Frederick.
Police want to advise the public that there is no further risk and that this was an isolated incident. Police believe that the rifles may have been stolen in the area.
Should residents in the east side neighbourhood have been the victim of a break in, or have any further information related to this evening's incident, they are asked to contact the Prince Rupert RCMP at 250-627-0700 or through CrimeStoppers.
