Minor Softball and Baseball Associations to merge with focus on the large ball
Prince Rupert remains a softball town for the moment as the Prince Rupert Minor Softball Association and North Coast Minor Baseball Association both announced a merger last week, with both groups vowing to work together to make for a better sports experience for Prince Rupert and Port Edward youth.
The April 5th notice on Facebook provided some of the background on the decision and focus on Softball for the year ahead, as well as the opportunity for those youngsters that still wish to learn baseball skills to take part in weekly events set for the Port Edward field.
With the population in the region still somewhat stagnant, the move to merger makes some good sense, as it allows the two groups to draw on their strengths to deliver a top tier program for youth and reflects the long standing history that Softball has had in the community over the decades
Should the city see a spurt in growth at some point in the future however, the foundation for a return to baseball is now in place and hopefully we may yet see the return of the hardball game down the road.
For 2019 however, it's the familiar sight of the larger ball that will be prominent, with the start of the season set for just after Easter, registration for the new collective group will continue until this Thursday.
Softball games will take place at the Prince Rupert Civic Centre's Doug Kerr Field during the week, while the optional weekend Baseball game will be hosted by Port Edward's McKeown Field.
You can learn more about the changes for this spring from the Softball Association's Facebook page.
