Massive blackout plunges most of Northern BC into darkness
Prince Rupert and the other communities of the North Coast appear to be the only communities in Northern British Columbia to still have power tonight, as BC Hydro reports of a massive transmission failure that has left over 100,000 residents in the dark.
Affected communities run north and west of Prince George including Vanderhoof, Smithers, Fort St John, Dawson Creek, Chetwynd, Hudsons Hope, Houston and Burns Lake. Crews are investigating and we will begin restoration efforts as soon as possible.
The power failure struck around nine PM and has generated a large number of reports from across the Northern region through social media.
BC Hydro continues to investigate the cause of the outage and will provide updates as the evening moves along, which could make residents of Prince Rupert and Port Edward popular for those on Social Media and through texting relaying what the latest news may be.
You can access the updates page and view the scope of the black out here.
Update: Lightning strike said to be responsible for power failure Wednesday night
