Oona River to vote in October referendum on Community Hall plans

North Coast Regional District will be asking Oona River residents for their opinion on proposed improvements to the Oona River Community Hall and associated properties, setting Saturday, October 19th as the Date for a referendum on the question.

This week the Regional body posted the details of the referendum process to their website, asking the following question.

“Are you in favour of the Board of the North Coast Regional District adopting the Oona River Community Hall Service Establishment Bylaw No. 632,, 2019, which will permit the North Coast Regional District to establish a service within the community of Oona River to fund, annually, $15,000 toward the operation, maintenance and capital improvement of the Oona River Community Hall and its associated properties?”

Oona River voters will also have an advance poll opportunity on October 9th.

The Oona River referendum plans, are just one of four initiatives that North Coast Regional District has moved forward on for this month.

As we noted on August 27th, the elected members of the Regional District have introduced three Alternative Approval Process initiatives for review from the public.

They are seeking to establish a Parks and Trail Service Bylaw for Electoral Area D (Masset), a recreation Service Bylaw for the Porcher Island and Hartley Bay area, as well as a Recreation Service Bylaw for Dodge Cove.

Those three bylaw proposals will move ahead unless ten percent of the population in each district expresses their opposition to the  proposed actions, something which could send the question to the larger referendum process.
