Garry Reece reclaims Mayoralty in Lax Kw'alaams after four year hiatus

Voters in Lax Kw'alaams and Prince Rupert have made their decision
on the make up for the Elected Band Council for the next four years

There's a change ahead for the Mayoralty in Lax Kw'alaams, but it's a familiar name that will take over the duties.

That as Gary Reece makes a return to the top elected position in the community, after topping incumbent John Helin in a tightly contested  campaign on Tuesday.

as he regained the Mayoralty from incumbent John Helin
following Tuesday's election.

Mr. Reece, who had lost the position to Mr. Helin four years ago, gathered the larger vote count, on election day, edging Mr. Helin by a margin of just fifteen votes, with the final tallies Reece 291, Helin 276.

In the Council election, thirty six candidates had put forward their names for the twelve positions that were available, the successful ones on Tuesday included:

On Reserve Council members

Robert Hughes -- 409 votes
Braden Dudoward -- 406votes
Kelly Sampson -- 397 votes
Gerri Alexcee -- 376 votes
Leona Wells -- 344 votes
Betty Reece -- 324 votes
Theodore White -- 326 votes
Andrew Jackie Tait --  300 votes
Angela Green -- 280 votes
Robert Moraes -- 277 votes

Off Reserve Council members

Harry Gary Russell -- 301 votes
Joey Wesley -- 264 votes

There were 949 votes cast during the voting period, 29 other ballots were registered as spoiled.

In the trustees race,  Michelle Bryant, Susan Dennis, Lisa Girbav, Tressa Johsnon and Carl Sampson Jr. were all elected to office, the vote totals from that election can be reviewed here.
