High ground Hike brings bounty of preparedness to local educator and daughter

A walk to school for Mike McDowall and his daughter Mya has gained the Prince Rupert pair a heaping helping of Emergency Preparedness goodies.

With the local educator at École Roosevelt Park School and his daughter one of two winners of Prepared BC's High Ground Hike competition of last week.

As we outlined at the start of the competition, the government agency hosted the province wide event to raise awareness of the dangers of tsunami and as part of their annual information campaign.

For the McDowall's the trek to success was as the realtors might say a thing of , location, location, location ...

With Roosevelt at the high point of the city proper, the walk to work and school from their home offered the perfect chance to take part in the annual competition, with a photo submitted from high ground for the agency's consideration.

We contacted Mr. McDowall prior to school today, who observed that luckily much of Prince Rupert, thanks to its hills, is located above the 20 metre mark of note by Emergency Preparedness Canada.

The Roosevelt teacher also noted that Tsunami Awareness is always something he's aware of.

"Tsunami Awareness is always close to may heart as I was born and raised in Port Alberni, home of the 1964 Tsunami disaster. Having lived there most of my life, I know full well how a community can be devastated by such an event."

Last week the students at Roosevelt also participated in the event to learn more about Tsunami Awareness.

You can learn more about Tsunami preparedness and other themes of preparation fo any emergency from the BC Gov't website.
