The afternoon and evening period for the Prince Rupert/Port Edward area has made for some heavy gusts of wind and blowing debris for many parts of the city as the evening arrived.

The winds also providing for a few power bumps and a couple of power outages of note for the region.

BC Hydro has reported two outages into the evening so far, one in the area between Port Edward and the Ridley Island Access Road, the other at the BC Hydro site area along highway 16.

At one point over 500 customers around the area had been impacted by the hydro outages.

Further down the Central Coast, there is a larger outage reported in Bella Bella, impacting a large portion of that area.

Updates on power outages in the region can be accessed through the BC Hydro website.

Earlier this evening Port Edward Volunteer Fire/Rescue had outlined some details of their very busy evening, noting of calls to assist BC Hydro in the community as the wind roared through the region.

In the city, the biggest issue so far has been the wind shifting outdoor items from homes, businesses and construction sites throughout the community, with safety fencing coming down in a number of locations around Prince Rupert, particularly in the downtown core area.

The City of Prince Rupert had issued an advisory for residents earlier today of the oncoming windstorm.

So far, neither the Prince Rupert Fire/Rescue Department or the Prince Rupert detachment of the RCMP have advised the community of any issues of concern in the city.

The latest update from Environment Canada noted that the heaviest of the winds would continue through the evening,  but should ease off gradually into the overnight period.

The Wind Warning was officially ended at just after 10:30 PM

Update: The windstorm has also impacted on BC Ferries service in and out of Prince Rupert with a revised schedule now in place.
