Hawkair will suspend it service to Smithers in August |
Terrace based Hawkair has announced that as of August 1st the airline will suspend its service out of the Smithers airport.
Increased costs and passenger levels were explained as the key elements of the decision. It was also noted that the slow down in the oil, gas and mining sectors in the region has provided for a reduction in workers travelling to the region.
Those Hawkair employees stationed in Smithers will be offered positions with the company, but will be required to relocate.
It's not the first time that the airline has suspended its Smithers service and town officials are hopeful that the airline will reconsider their decision at some point in the future. The Smithers airport is also served by Air Canada which offers two flights daily to and from Vancouver as well as Central Mountain air which offers a flight to Prince George.
Hawkair Daily Service out of Smithers will be suspended as of the start of August |
In addition to service out of Terrace, Hawkair provides a daily flight to and from Vancouver out of the Prince Rupert airport.
