The first night for bids is in the books, as Prince Rupert's Rotarian's opened the bidding at 6:30 promptly Monday night, setting in motion three nights of bargain hunting for North Coast residents by way of the Prince Rupert Rotary Club Auction.
Prince Rupert Chamber of Commerce President Keith Lambourne held the centre spot on the stage Monday, providing the background to this years event, before turning over the festivities to auctioneers Sheila Gordon-Payne and Herb Pond.
The first item up for bid on the night was a book of the work of local photographer Lonnie Wishart, who donated her book to the Rotary Auction, one of many local residents and businesses that have contributed their work, goods or services to the Rotarians for the annual community fund raising effort.
The history of the Rotary Auction made for the focus of the first half hour as Doug Kydd introduced long time Rotarian John McNish who provided the historical footnotes of the annual tradition. Calling back to the early days of the auction as a radio event and it's migration to television over the years becoming a highly anticipated fall event each for local residents.
Vignettes from participating sponsors of the Rotary Auction were also featured through the first night of the broadcast from the Lester Centre. The short profiles providing a look at some of the local businesses that have joined in to lend a hand towards this years event.
The Auction can be viewed on Channel 10 and streams live online from the CityWest and Rotary Club websites as well.
