Weather Warning Issued: More snow on the way for Terrace, Kitimat and Smithers
If your travel plans this afternoon and evening include a journey inland to Terrace, Kitimat or Smithers you should be prepared for winter driving conditions with that region of the inland North Coast destined for another major dump of snow.
A Weather warning issued by Environment Canada at 11:15 this morning notes that up to 40 centimetres of snow is forecast for the Terrace Kitimat region, along with the risk of freezing rain.
The snow is expected to change to rain by Wednesday night, something that could raise the avalanche risk for sections of Highway 16 between Terrace and Prince Rupert.
That stretch of the corridor was closed to traffic Saturday night just west of Terrace, owing to a high risk of avalanche as the conditions changed through the overnight period, the road reopened on Sunday morning, while avalanche control work took place.
The next wave of snow for the inland areas follows this weekend's storm which deposited 57 centimetres in Terrace and some 63 centimetres for the Kitimat region.
You can stay up to date on the Weather warning and any upgrades from the Environment Canada website.
For Prince Rupert the approaching storm will be a rain event, with 50 mm of rain expected by Wednesday evening, with more to follow through the remainder of the week.
To be aware of road conditions along Highway 16 and other roadways in and out of Terrace monitor the Drive BC website and twitter feed.
You can also get a quick snapshot of conditions through our links to the highway camera network around the region.
