They made a bit of history at the Fairview Terminal over the weekend as ILWU workers at the DP World Container Terminal handled the first containers to come ashore in Prince Rupert from the vessel COSCO Himalayas, which had pulled in alongside at one of the two berths that were in use at the terminal.
The Prince Rupert Port Authority noted that with its arrival, the Himalayas is the largest container vessel to ever call on a Canadian Port, the vessel features a capacity of 14,500 TEU's.
The vessel which is flagged out of Hong Kong, was completed and entered service earlier this year, it measures 366 metres by 51.27 metres and has gross tonnage of 154,369. The deck can accommodate as many as 20 rows and 10 layers of containers.
It was built by the the Shanghai Jiangnan Chagxing Shipbuilding Company and was delivered to the shipping line in July.
The Himalayas visit was a short one, from its arrival on November 14th, the four day turn around time at Fairview saw the vessel make its departure on Sunday. It's currently southbound towards Long Beach California and most recently listed as located just off the coast of Banks Island.
It's travel itinerary has already found the vessel transiting to many of the world's high profile terminals, with a September tour that took the vessel to Rotterdam in the heart of Europe, with calls at a number of other European ports as it worked its way into full service for the shipping line.
