Will tonight mark your last night of turning the clocks back? As annual ritual arrives, BC government has introduced legislation to bring standardized time to the province
Tonight is the night for a bit of time travel, with residents of the Northwest preparing to reprise the time honoured reminder of Falling back in time ... with clocks set to go back one hour overnight providing for one additional hour of sleep in the morning, but shorter daylight hours in the weeks to come.
When we take to our routines of Monday morning however, the change in time will make for some adjustment and awareness as the winter approaches we will soon be heading out in the morning in darkness and returning home in much the same state as the evening hours approach.
The official time for the time change is 2 AM, but with more and more of our personal devices now making the change automatically, there is little for us to do other than to make sure that our wall clocks and other non connected timepieces are adjusted accordingly before we retire for the night.
As you do make the rounds, it is also a good opportunity to ensure that your smoke detectors, CO detectors and other household safety devices are freshened up with new batteries.
If all goes according to the plans of hopeful Time Changer John Horgan. this may however be the last time for falling back in time.
Earlier this week, the NDP government introduced its legislation that will position the province to adopt one time on a year round basis.
“British Columbians have said loud and clear that they want to do away with the practice of changing our clocks twice a year and our government is taking action. This bill creates a clear path forward for the transition, while also ensuring we take into account every detail during implementation.”
While the bill doesn’t immediately shift the province to permanent DST, it puts us in position to do so quickly. This legislation is a signal to British Columbians that their collective voice has been heard and that our government is attending to every detail in preparation to do away with the biannual time change once and for all.” -- British Columbia Premier John Horgan
The original goal was to align BC with all of the Pacific coast and discussions are continuing towards that initiative; though the NDP has indicated that they may just go it alone in the future and await the others to catch up.
For now, BC is on the clock when it comes to its plans ... but you'll still have to make one more time change in the future, that when we return to Daylight Saving Time in the Spring and our brave new experiment in time shifting is set to begin.
