RCMP's On line Crime Reporting program goes live Thursday

Starting this week, residents and business owners in Prince Rupert will be able to inform the RCMP detachment of less serious crimes by way of a new online reporting process.

The nature of the reporting program that of one which will accept information that does not require follow up of a member of the detachment.

The program was introduced to residents of the city at the December City Council session, when Sergeant Pascal Baldinger of the Prince Rupert detachment delivered a long delayed update from the local office and then provided some of the key elements to the program.

The program is being rolled out across Northwestern British Columbia

To participate in the program, users must have a valid email address, the online tool will be of particular interest when it comes to non-emergency crimes and where residents or business owners require a file number immediately for their records or for insurance claims.

Among some of the crimes that the program is designed for:

Damage/mischief to property under $5,000 
Damage/mischief to a vehicle under $5,000 
Hit and run to an unoccupied vehicle or property 
Theft of bicycle under $5,000 •Theft under $5,000 
Theft from vehicle under $5,000 
Lost property

Beyond the convenience that the new system offers for residents, the goal of the program is also to all for call takers and front line personnel to put the focus on higher priority calls, which should work towards improving overall community safety and improving on response times.
