COVID both in the schools and at Acropolis Manor continued to make much in the way of news for the week.
That as the outbreak in the community continued to circulate for both, sadly claiming two more lives at the long term care facility, raising totals of those with positive cases and relaying news of potential exposures..
A marine incident southeast of Kitimat involving a Prince Rupert based tug has been of much note in this community throughout the weekend, that after two crew members perished, with a third hospitalized from the sinking of the boat in the overnight of Wednesday into Thursday morning.
A pair of City Council stories also found a large audience this week, with forward momentum found for housing plans on Kootenay and Council looking to chase down a grant opportunity for a public washroom facility in the downtown area.
Of our five stories of note on the week, the most read story was our look at the Kootenay plans and some comments from a council member on community responses to development.
Kootenay Avenue housing plans move forward, while Councillor Skelton-Morven laments the Nimby effect in the city -- Some progress on housing was found at City Council on Monday, with councillors hearing of a revised plan for development of a number of units along Kootenay Avenue and moving the process forward; though for one councillor some of the concerns from the neighbourhood gave him cause to speak out on themes of Not in my back yard in the community when it comes to housing proposals. Two more passings reported from Acropolis Manor, brings to twelve the number of COVID-19 related deaths since Mid January at the long term care facility in Prince Rupert -- The ongoing COVID-19 outbreak at Acropolis Manor sadly claimed two more lives this week, bringing the total number of those who have passed to twelve. Large Scale Search and Rescue Operation south of Kitimat following marine incident -- A tragic event unfolded during a frigid Wednesday evening in waters southeast of Kitimat as a Prince Rupert based tug towing a barge sank after a still unexplained incident, By Thursday, two crew members had been recovered declared deceased and a third had been taken to hospital. The investigation is now underway to determine what was the cause of the incident which has rocked the Prince Rupert community. (posted February 11, 2021)
Council to consider opportunity to seek out funding for additional public restroom facilities in the City -- Our preview of one element of Monday's council session found a strong audience this week, as readers explored the prospect of a new downtown public washroom facility. We followed up our Monday preview, with an account of the discussion and subsequent vote to move forward with the grant application towards the facility. (posted February 8, 2021)
