Weekend Rugby Camp morphing into something of a Rugby Festival

The Charles Hays Sports Field will be a busy place this 
weekend as Youth Rugby players from across the Northwest
come to Prince Rupert for the Thunder Rugby Camp

Prince Rupert will be the centre of the Northwest BC Rugby universe this weekend as the local Youth Rugby program in the city hosts the Thunder Rugby Tour which will see participants receive instruction from a travelling group of rugby coaches and instructors.

As we outlined earlier this month, the event is free for the three days which get underway on Friday at  5 PM at the Charles Hays Secondary Sports Field. 

One of the local organizers for the event, Michael Pucci noted for the North Coast Review that so far they have had fifty kids register from the weekend event, with some of the participants coming from as far away as Kitwanga.

He also explained that the hotel and flights for the coaches at the event have been covered by the Prince Rupert Mens Team, the Prince Rupert Seamen, who used money from their own funds towards building the sport in the community. 

There are discount codes available for those who wish to register, if you don't wish to use the codes the cost for the two days of instruction is 23.50

The schedule is a full one with lots of activity planned for the weekend events, beyond the instruction there will be a welcome to the territory ceremony, Presentations, BBQ meet and Greet and Touch / Flag tourney to wrap up the three days on Sunday.

Part of the focus for the Thunder Rugby program is to introduce and build the sport among Indigenous Youth across the province, and towards that goal, the Prince Rupert stop is but the first of province wide tour taking place through to the end of August.

The Prince Rupert Camp has also been receiving some high profile message making from some of the local industry with both the Prince Rupert Port Authority and DP World Prince Rupert recently sharing word of this weekends event.

The weekend camp is also providing an opportunity for the Prince Rupert Seamen to take to the rugby field in some competition, with the local side hosting the Terrace Northmen in a Saturday night contest at CHSS, that game will get underway at 6PM
