COVID continues to offer up reminders that there is still much work to be done across the province, but for one week at least, there was a signal that the vaccination program of the last few months has paid off in the Prince Rupert area.
That as the latest report from the BC CDC made for our top story of the week highlighting the Northwest totals on new cases for the last seven days.
Also making our list of five this week were a pair of items related to Tourism with a few items of note from Alaska that suggest that we may see a return of the Alaska Marine Highway System in 2022.
We also discovered a proposal for a new Adventure Tourism activity for the community which could see the Butze Rapids the focus for the proposed tourism concept.
A pair of civic related themes wrapped up the top five items for the week, with our notes on the recent ratification vote on a first contract for the RCMP and how it may impact on Northwest communities.
And a story which gained notice late in the afternoon on Friday clearly resonated with those who follow the blog, with a large volume of readers exploring our notes on the announcement of the suspension of the City's blue bin recycling program until January of 2022.
However, the top item of interest for the week returns to the ongoing work related to COVID and a look at the most recent data from the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control.
Prince Rupert returns to a ZERO COVID case count; but Kitimat jumps to 15 for week ending August 14th -- After recording its first cases of COVID since June last week, the results for Prince Rupert returned to a more welcome count of Zero for the week ending August 14th, however as Prince Rupert found some positive news, Kitimat saw a spike for their community in the last week. Alaska Ferry Planning for 2022 holds space open for return of AMHS service to and from Prince Rupert if requirements are met -- While the 2021 summer season once again has seen the Alaska Ferry Terminal shuttered, the Alaska Marine Highway Service is making plans for 2022 and looking to include Prince Rupert as a stop once again providing some outstanding issues can be resolved ( posted August 17, 2021)
Mounties ratify first contract, with significant pay bumps to come -- With a first ever labour contract negotiated earlier this year, members of the RCMP provided their ratification towards the deal this week; setting the stage of some significant pay bumps for Force and some increased policing costs for communities. City of Prince Rupert curbside recycling program to be delayed until January 2022 -- Despite a statement issued late into the day on a Friday, out notes on the announcement that the City's Blue Bin curbside recycling program will be delayed until 2022 still generated some significant interest from our readership. (posted August 20, 2021)
