Property Disposition from July may spark progress on Park Avenue hotel Plans

There are few signs so far of any imminent build to take place for the 
proposed Micro Hotel on Park Avenue

The proposed sale of a City of Prince Rupert property adjacent to a planned hotel on Park Avenue may mark some progress for the much discussed, but as of yet, still stalled development on the city's far west side.

The notice of the property disposition was posted to the City of Prince Rupert website on July 29th, with the City noting of their plans to sell the property to Mr. Parm Sandhu, under his BC numbered company for the appraised value of $48,000.

The land which borders the houses on Kootenay and leads to Park Avenue is on the back side of what has been proposed to be a three storey,  sixty unit hotel development.

The approval of the project by City Council came over one year ago, with a public hearing held on July 27th moving swiftly through the process with no feedback from he public.

The approval for the Park Avenue development came following some challenging times for the proponents, who had found their interest in the property suddenly in the air following some changes to the city's direction for development on the Park Avenue corridor.

In April of 2021, City Council received a preview of the proposed micro-hotel, an overview which noted of a reduction in the amount of unites proposed for the development. The presentation was part of the process which led to the public hearing and subsequent approval.

Since then however, there has been little indication of progress for the hotel build, the lot currently one overgrown with vegetation and few signs that construction is imminent. 

There is no explanation from the City's Public Notice of July 29th as to the reason for the sale of the land,  though as we learned during the All Native Tournament, hotel rooms are hard to come by at times in the city, so any process towards development will be a welcome one for the commercial and tourism sectors in the community.
