High Avalanche risk along Highway 16 at Exchamsiks has CLOSED the road |
Update: Highway Closure was replaced by a Travel Advisory at mid morning Christmas Day.
Conditions along Highway between Prince Rupert and Terrace went from bad to worse as Christmas Eve moved on towards Christmas Day, with freezing rain, snow and winds drifting the snow combining for poor driving conditions for much of the day.
Late Saturday night, Drive BC added Avalanche Risk to the listings, announcing first a closure from 9PM to 11 PM for avalanche attendance, then a Full Overnight Closure for the highway owing to the high risk of avalanches in an area 50 kilometres west of Terrace, the area of risk is near Exchamsiks Park.

The Highway will remain CLOSED until at least 8AM on Christmas Day with the next update on the situation to come at 7AM
A number of other warnings are also in place on both the Prince Rupert side and the Terrace side of the Avalanche Risk area.
