It was a weekend of high tempo basketball at Charles Hays on Friday and Saturday, as the Rainmakers hosted the always tough Queen Charlotte Secondary School Saints for a three game showdown at the CHSS gym.
With starter Justin McChesney hobbled and out of the line up for the weekend, the Rainmakers went to the bench to keep pace with the Saints, offering up a series of entertaining games for those in attendance, with two of three in the series very close affairs.
Friday nights series tip off delivered a high energy game, with the two teams exploring lanes into the offensive zone in a back and forth match through the first half. Queen Charlotte built up a sizable lead through the third, holding an eight point advantage going into the final quarter. From there Rainmakers launched their comeback bid, a successful push that carried them to a 90-85 victory for game one.
Saturday morning provided much the same kind of drama as the night before, with the Saints coming on strong to send a message to the hosts. Turning things around in the second half to reverse the Rainmakers advantage and closing the game out with tenacious play, claiming the middle game of the three game series by a score of 76 to 72.
The intensity from game two set the stage for the 7 PM finale to the series, with a noisy crowd in the stands to provide some playoff like atmosphere as the two teams settled in for their rubber match of the weekend.
Game three highlighted the adjustments that the Rainmakers had made after their two games previous, though the Saints continued on their attack, staying close to the CHSS squad through the third quarter.
The Rainmakers however held the advantage 63-57 heading into the final period and would not surrender it, providing some solid shut down basketball and then building on to their lead as the game began to get away from the guests.
The final score of 90-69 Rainmakers a good indication as to the twin threats of their play of the night, while the grind of three games in less than 24 hours perhaps weighed harder on the Saints who couldn't summon up the energy to make a final push in the last quarter.

Taking two out of three over the weekend should serve the Rainmakers well later this week when the Province newspaper issues its latest AAA Rankings, which currently have the Charles Hays squad pegged at third place.
The two teams may get the chance to renew acquaintances this weekend, as both are heading south to play in the Pitt Meadows Air Show, that tournament runs from Thursday to Saturday.
The Rainmakers will tip off in their first match on Thursday when they take on Sir Charles Tupper at 1:15.
Haida Gwaii opens their tournament up against Collingwood later that evening at 9:45.
You can learn more about the tournament from the Pitt Meadows Marauders website.
