Among the stories that generated some interest a look at some of the community interest in the current woes, the rather low profile on the topic from some of our elected officials and a move to spark some community discussion on ways to address the water situation.
Also grabbing some of the attention this week, our look at the first application for a cannabis retail business in the city which is now under consideration, as well as a pair of items related to the protest checkpoint and arrest of 14 participants in it at the Morice River Bridge south of Houston.
However the top story of the week once again put the focus on the city's ongoing troubles with its supply of drinking water.
Prince Rupert's Boil Water Notice: 29 Days at 100 degrees Celsius ... and counting -- Prince Rupert heads into week number five of Boil Water Notice and as it does interest in the situation began to find many avenues of approach. Another of our items on the water issues for the community attracted a large audience this week as well, that coming from our look at the plans of Prince Rupert resident Tom Kertes to hold a Kitchen Table discussion today on the city's water woes. Prince Rupert's First Cannabis location seeks government licensing approval -- Five Corners could be the spot for the city's debut into the world of retail cannabis, with The High Culture making its application to the province's regulatory body to open for business in Prince Rupert. As part of the process, the city is accepting comments from the public related to the application until January 24th. (posted January 9, 2018)
On Prince Rupert water issues, the North Coast MLA is more or less MIA -- As residents of the city continued with their water boiling for another week, the comments from many elected officials were few and far between, including those of Jennifer Rice, the MLA for the North Coast. This week also found the MLA in the spotlight over some comments late in the week related to First Nation governance, a commentary that has stirred up a bit of a hornets nest for the MLA and her party. Prince Rupert one of a number of locations holding protests over Gidimt'en checkpoint arrests -- As events moved forward in the Bulkley Valley and a protest site at the Morice River Bridge, the arrest Monday of 14 of those manning the checkpoints spawned a number of protests on Tuesday including on e in Prince Rupert. NDP MP Nathan Cullen to visit Unit'stot'en blockade site near Houston, as RCMP members stage for potential enforcement -- The MP for Skeena-Bulkley Valley travelled to the checkpoint location prior to the arrests of Monday. (posted January 7, 2018)
