Prince Rupert's First Cannabis location seeks government licensing approval

Five Corners could be the home for the first Cannabis outlet in Prince Rupert
with The High Culture Shop making application with the provincial authority
that oversees regulation and approvals

After a year of discussion, zoning changes and community consultation Prince Rupert may be on the cusp of seeing its first Cannabis Retail operation open its doors.

A notice posted to the City of Prince Rupert website on Tuesday has outlined an advisory that The High Culture Shop has made an application with the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch to open up a retail operation in Prince Rupert at #4-1100 Park Avenue.

The proposed hours for the retail store would be from 9AM to 11 PM

The City notice observes how the establishment is within the area and zones approved for Retail Cannabis Stores at a special council session in December.

The Park Avenue section of the new Cannabis Retail zoning for
Prince Rupert may deliver the first cannabis store for the community

The location chosen by The High Culture Shop is the old Sears location at Five corners which closed it doors in October of 2017 and has been empty ever since.

The Park Avenue zoning was a late addition to the City's original zoning provisions, tacked on at the very end of the city's lengthy overview process and met with some opposition from a few of the area residents and businesses when it was approved.

The approval allowing for cannabis retail operations in the Park Avenue area came following the December 10th Council session which found a number of city residents and potential retailers providing Council with their thoughts on the zoning issues.

The City's notice does not indicate how long the provincial approval process may take and when the new retail outlet may open its doors.
