MP Nathan Cullen adds his name to the call for Federal action on the BC fishery

There have been few trips out of port this summer for the North Coast
Fishing fleet as the fishery suffered another year of closures

Last week we outlined some of the frustrations from UFAWU-Unifor when it came to raising awareness over the dire situation facing those involved in the British Columbia fishery this year, with the union seeking some assistance from politicians at all levels, to make their case for disaster assistance for fishermen.

At that time, the union had made note of one letter from Shane Simpson, the Provincial Minister of Social Development and Poverty reduction, he had forwarded his concerns to Patty Hajdu, the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour.

Since they relayed the themes of that correspondence they have added to the list of support, while observing that they still have not received any form of feedback on the issue from the Federal Government

Included among those who have spoken out on the situation is Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen who addressed an August 19th letter to Federal Fisheries Minister Jonathan Wilkinson.

In his correspondence, Mr. Cullen makes note of the low captures and ongoing closures of area fisheries and how now is the time for the Federal Government to step in and provide support for workers and their families who are facing another incredibly difficult year.

The 2019 Fishing season has been one that has delivered for few fishing opportunities for the commercial fishery, providing for a domino effect on work opportunities for those in local fishing plants.
