With farewell for Smithers Council, MP elect Taylor Bachrach prepares for new political role
The now former Mayor of Smithers bade his farewell to his political home for much of the last decade last night, with Taylor Bachrach attending his final Town Council meeting, an event where he received the well wishes of his fellow councillors along with a farewell gift on behalf of the community.
Mr. Bachrach who was elected MP for Skeena-Bulkley Valley on October 21st will now chart his political compass for points east and Parliament Hill, with the new MP awaiting his first day in the House of Commons on December 5th.
That is the date that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced for the start of the new Parliament, a day that will also feature the placement of a new speaker and a Speech from the throne to chart the Liberal government's plans in this minority government.
The new MP will be able to ease into the work ahead though, once they take their place in the House of Commons on the fifth, the MPs will adjourn on the 13th for the Holiday season.
The learning curve of federal politics is already underway for the new MP, with Mr. Bachrach having already been in Ottawa for some preparation for the new duties that he will take on.
The first of the sessions basic primers for new MP's, offering up help on setting up an office, with maybe a map or field trip to show the incoming class where there lunchroom is and the washrooms.
Last night he shared some thoughts on his final meeting. with the Smithers Council through his social media feed.
Skeena-Bulkley Valley's new MP, who kept the seat in the hands of the NDP following the October vote, will replace the riding's long serving MP Nathan Cullen as the new session of Parliament gets underway next month.
You can chart some of his journey ahead through our House of Commons page as the days, months and maybe even years to come (minority governments can be fickle) through that archive.
