Rainmakers Ready for Title Defence at B. C. AA Basketball Provincials
It's Tournament Time for the Senior Boy's of Charles Hays, as the Mel and Ryan Bishop led squad take to the court this evening in Game Number One, for the four day Annual Celebration of High School Basketball.
This year's Provincials mark the 75th anniversary of the High School Basketball showcase, making the 2020 tournament one which holds just a little more spotlight as the teams take to the court at the Langley Events Centre.
The Senior Boys Rainmakers are the top seed in the AA Bracket, their status as Defending champs and a season of success at their home court at the Charles Hays Gymnasium and impressive outings in a number of major Vancouver area tournaments placing them as the front runner.
That of course makes them the talk of the AA bracket and as we noted earlier this week the tournament preview show of Sunday establishing the makers as the team to beat.
Something that will bring some extra incentive for those that they meet during this week, as the teams work their way towards the Saturday afternoon finale.
The Makers open their tournament experience up with their icebreaker game set for 7:45 tonight when they tip off against Samuel Robertson, the prime time matchup making for the final contest of the eight on the Opening Day for the 2020 tournament.
It being the 75th anniversary, there are a number of additional events tied into this years tournament, one of them a display at the BC High School Basketball Museum at the LEC that charts the growth of the tournament and features some Prince Rupert memories from the past.
Howard Tsumura's Varsity Letters blog makes note of the Museum and other events surrounding the 7th Anniversary of the tournament.
His online portal is also an indispensable resource for high school basketball fans with his Tournament notes well worth exploring as this week continues forward.
Among his notes a look back at the top 25 BC High School players of all time which features John Olsen of the 1962 Rainmaker team.
Though as the comments show, settling on the top 25 ever will leave a few top level players on the bench and makes for some extensive discussion.
As has been the case for all of the Provincial Tournaments, fans of the Rainmaker Boys can follow their path of next week through a streaming video service offered by the Tournament organizers.
You can learn more about the streaming options here.
