For the moment they probably aren't anticipating many guests, but should the summer bring a relaxation of travel for British Columbians as we come out of a third wave of COVID, the Prince Rupert Port Interpretive Centre and Tourism Prince Rupert Office will be ready with a welcome.
The Prince Rupert Port Authority made note of the new hours last Friday, with a Social Media note advising that the Port's popular information centre is now open Seven Days a Week with hours of 9 AM to 6PM.
There are Social Distance measures in effect as we continue along our COVID path, with a maximum of seven visitors allowed at a time, with Face masks mandatory . As well for contact tracing purposes guests are required to sign in as they enter the Centre.
What the 2021 Tourism season may look like is anyone's guess at the moment, currently British Columbians are being limited to access to their Health Authority regions with Northern health and Interior health considered one zone.
Those limitations may be reviewed following this upcoming long weekend.
However, with COVID numbers still high and vaccination programs still a program in motion, the large scale volume of tourists for the Northwest most likely won't be seen at the start of the season, if at all this year.
One thing is certain, the large number of cruise ship visitors that normally make a trip to the Interpretive centre won't be happening this year, the 2021 Cruise season was cancelled earlier this year.
The Alaska Season may yet go ahead, that as the US government considers allowing vessels to transit from Seattle to Alaska without need of a Canadian stopover, a move which has many Canadian tourism operators concerned for the Canadian cruise shore based industry's future.
