Council to be asked to approve plan for additional time for clean up of Second Avenue West Mohawk property

The owners of the property at Second Avenue West and First Street, commonly known as the old Mohawk location have reached out to City staff towards the recent Remediation Order directed to their property.

As we outlined back in February, Council had moved forward on a Remediation Order as part of its ongoing work on addressing nuisance properties in the city, particularly in the downtown core.

Second Avenue Business owners push back on City Demolition plans

City Council to review two Remedial Property Removal Orders at Public Session tonight

As part of that program, a number of those properties have been demolished in recent months, though  in the case of the old Mohawk site, a stay of execution seems to have been put in place.

That as the City provides for seven areas for clean up that would likely change the course of action from the Remediation Order of February.

Those seven items on the To Do List include:

1. Removal of all unkept grass and weeds on the property
2. Pressure wash the premises (entrances, property grounds, etc.)
3. Clean-up and removal of all garbage on site
4. Removal (or covering up by way of painting the exterior) of all graffiti on the property
5. Replace any damage fence panels
6. Removal of the old, dilapidated signs at the corner of the property
7. Removal (or appropriate replacement) of plywood window coverings.

That appears to have started a back and forth correspondence process between the Owners and the City with both the correspondence from Frank Chirico and a report on the issue from the Director of Corporate and Legislative Services, Rosa Miller available for review through the Agenda to tonights council session.

The path forward for the Chirico's for their downtown property will be up for discussion by Council and as it is part of the Agenda for the night it could also be a topic for the public to weigh in on.

That as part of the Public Discussion portion of the night at the start of the evening.

More notes on the Council Session tonight can be reviewed here.

  1. Only in Rupert is painting plywood covered windows considered an upgrade.

  2. Why did the owners think that it’s ok to leave the property the way it was and then when they were called out, ask for an apology? Entitlement at its finest
