North Coast residents among the honourees at RCMP's North District Ceremony

The RCMP handed out awards to over 100 member, Civilian Employees and Auxiliary constables last week as the North District Detachment presented Awards of Distinction last Wednesday in Prince George.

Recipients from across the District, including members and staff from the North Coast were honoured, some receiving a commemorative medal ordered by Queen Elizabeth II. The RCMP was allocated 2,300 of the medals, using them as an opportunity to recognize the tremendous work of their employees on behalf of the Force.

At the same ceremony, the Commanding Officer's Letter of Appreciation was awarded to 3 residents of the North coast, with Gene and Christine Storey, as well as Robert McKay, honoured for their efforts in a fire at Meziadan Lake, a community east of Stewart back in January of 2010.

The Storey's and Mr. McKay, who had cabins in the area, assisted neighbours in a third cabin which had become engulfed in flames, alerting the two residents to the fire. Putting their own lives in danger to lead the couple to safety.

The North District Awards took place at the Prince George Coast Inn, they were presided over by Deputy Commissioner Craig Callens, who handed out the awards, medals and certificates of appreciation.
