Blog Watching: Week ending July 15, 2018


Prince Rupert's industrial base dominated much of the flow of news for the last seven days, with three of our five items of the week featuring news related to port facilities or development.

The prospect for another bulk fluid terminal project was updated this week as the Port of Prince Rupert outlined the growing interest from the Dutch industrial company Vopak, which is exploring plans to build their own shipment facility at Ridley Island.

Ridley Terminals was in the news this week with their own expansion plans, as the Coal handling facility begins the process of a potential addition of a second shipping berth to their Ridley Island location.

An industrial incident at DP World's Fairview Container Terminal sent four workers to hospital and the facility evacuated for much of a day as officials examined the terminal for traces of inhalants.

British Columbia's  NDP government is changing the nature of how health care will be paid for in the province and one of their changes appears destined to require a larger financial share from the City of Prince Rupert.

And the federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh was touring the Northwest this week, holding get togethers in a number of communities in the Skeena-Bulkley Valley riding.

However the story which dominated our list of five on the week brings us to the waterfront once again, with the Port of Prince Rupert sharing some notes on a proposed bulk fluids shipping terminal for Ridley Island.

Jagmeet Singh's Northwest tour continues in Prince Rupert today -- The leader of the Federal NDP was in the Northwest this week, as MP Nathan Cullen took him on a tour of the Skeena-Bulkley Valley riding.    (posted July 11, 2018 )
