The Prince Rupert Port Authority is looking to investigate the potential for some additional shipping movements through port facilities, recently putting forward a Request for Proposals towards an assessment on Hydrogen Market Opportunities through the Prince Rupert Gateway.
The RFP posted to the BC Bid website earlier this month puts the Port's focus on the Hydrogen industry and potential service through the PRPA.
A supply chain centric market opportunity assessment covering both production and supply in North America and connecting that to demand in Asia and globally for hydrogen and hydrogen carriers including competitive context such as transportation costs, terminal capabilities and capacities for handling ammonia and potentially other 'hydrogen carriers'.
This work is intended to give PRPA an in depth understanding of the overall hydrogen market and inform decisions on the Port’s potential role in the near to long term with respect to energy transition and hydrogen regionally and globally.
Six elements make for the PRPA interest in the proposed study, Commercial environment, Competitive Transportation and Port Analysis, Market Size, Storage and Transportation, Hydrogen Policies and Strategies and Advantages and challenges to the Port of Prince Rupert.

The timeline towards the project has the submission of Bids set for September 7th, with the successful applicant expected to have completed the Assessment by the November 30th deadline.
The Port's interest in adding the shipment of Hydrogen product through Port facilities would serve to work towards their goals of further diversification of their footprint on the Prince Rupert waterfront, that ever evolving theme was one of the key elements of the
Port's APM in June of this year.
Hydrogen has a growing future in the energy sector and is finding expanded use in many Asian markets, which would make Prince Rupert a logical shipment point for the Canadian market.
More notes on the Hydrogen Assessment plans can be found from the
BC Bid website.
