Bike to Work Week to start Monday

Pedal Power will replace Horse Power for some from May 25 to 30th, as Rupert residents take to their bikes for Bike to Work week.

This year's celebration of alternative and healthy transportation will kick off tomorrow at the Moose Hall, with a registration party planned at the Last Minute market that takes place at the 1st Avenue West Hall.

While you're there you can have take advantage of a chance for a quick tune up of your bike, or learn more about helmet safety for your travels ahead.

The Opening party runs from 9 AM to 12:30 PM

Through the week riders can gain encouragement through a Facebook page created to keep participants up to date on the event. As well, those looking to participate can learn how they can submit their information related to such things as calories burned, kilometres travelled and greenhouse gas emissions that have been saved.


As you pedal through the streets in the week ahead you could also be helping the KAPS Bicycle Fund, a local initiative that provides money to bicycle related projects in the community.

Once participants log at least 1 trip during Bike to Work Week, any donation that they make per each kilometre cycled will be matched with a donation to the Fund.

The week long project will wrap up with a Bike to Work Week party, returning to the Moose Hall on May 30th, where there will be a barbecue and prize draw, the closing event will start at 9 AM and continue through to 12:30 PM.

Earlier this month the Bike To Work Facebook page tipped local bike riders to a community minded offer from FarWest Sport an Cycle,  the Prince Rupert cycling and sports store is offering free bicycle inspections until the end of May.  It offers up a good opportunity to see if the mechanical parts of your bike, housebound through the winter as they may have been, can still propel you in the right direction.

FarWest is not the only local business getting into the fast lane of Bike to Work week, with Pioneer Rooms and Overwaitea also showing some spirit for the week long event.
