An opportunity for the province's young fishers to learn from those that have trail-blazed and established the industry in the province is set for this week, as delegates from around British Columbia gather in Victoria for the BC Young Fishermen's Network Gathering taking place January 23rd and 24th.
Panel discussions and sessions on a range of fishery related issues and topics will mark for much of the two day gathering, which is designed to help provide a supportive environment for those new to the industry.
Last years event, which was held in Steveston feature 40 young fishers, who sought out the experience of some 65 industry members to gain a better understanding of both fishery challenges and opportunities.
The sessions have been partly assisted by the Ministry of Agriculture through it's Grow BC program, with Minister Lana Popham making not of the positive experience the gathering offers.
“It’s incredibly important to support the next generation as they enter or build on their career in seafood in B.C. I’m happy to see GrowBC helping to make such a positive learning experience more accessible.”
Included among those set to address the two day event is the North Coast's Des Nobel, the retired fisherman and community activist who will deliver the keynote address to the gathering on Wednesday morning.
