The fund raising initiative was organized by the Cassiar Cannery which has praised the work of the local Ground SAR group for month, first launching the idea of the fund raising project in mid December.
As the folks at the Cassiar Cannery explain it on their event page for Saturday's celebrations, the idea for the fundraiser germinated from a request for the use of their trailer during a search last year.
In early December, they caught our attention when they scoured the area in torrential rains and gale force winds for days looking for a missing local. PRGSAR reached out to the Cassiar Cannery to borrow their enclosed trailer, as the canvas command center could not stand up to the weather. Realizing PRGSAR was working towards improved equipment, Cassiar Cannery decided to bring the community together to say thanks and raise some funds to assist in operations.
Prince Rupert's Crest Hotel is the host venue for a fund raiser this Saturday in aid of the Prince Rupert Ground Search and Rescue Unit |
One week ago, the organizers noted that they had collected over 70 donations towards the Silent Auction, making for over 10,000 dollars in goods that could be up on the auction block tomorrow with the first lot up for bid starting at Noon, with auctions continuing through to 5 PM.
Saturday's festivities also feature food and drink specials at the Crest with partial proceeds to be directed towards the goal of purchasing a new Command Centre for the Ground SAR group.
The days festivities take place in the BC Room at the Crest from Noon until 6 PM
You can check out many of the items to be available for bid on Saturday through the Cassiar Cannery Facebook page.
